My egg checker (technical name egg candler) works by way of a small light that passes through the egg, like an x-ray machine to see if you have fertile or unfertile eggs.

This is a fertile egg. See the slight red discolouration on egg when light shines through.

Notice the faint red marks on the egg. This is the egg checker's light shining through the egg showing a network of red veins .

I am sorry this photo is slightly blurry.

You put the light under the clutch of eggs in the nesting box with as little light coming from behind you, when all of sudden you will either see a fine network of red veins over the egg with a central red spot or just a clear egg which will just have the yolk and albumen showing. 

 A normal torch will not allow the same intensity of light to pass through the egg nor a lamp as these can become too hot and damage the embryo inside. Through trial and error I have made the egg checker to help take the guess work out of breeding. You will find this an invaluable tool for the bird hobbyist as well as the kids will find it fascinating and amazing .
